The Lancaster Red Rose Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society was founded in 1935, in Lancaster, not only to present musical shows and entertainment, but also to raise money for local charities. The Lancaster Red Rose Amateurs started with a meagre bank balance of 7/6d in 1935 but in Spring 1936 they were able to present ‘No No Nanette’ at the Grand Theatre, Lancaster

That was the start of their fund-raising ventures and it helped the society to provide a ‘Baby’ Austin car to the local district nurses. The society is proud of the fact that it is truly amateur, no-one ever receiving payment for what have been truly wonderful and generous contributions. Quite a few members have received their 50 years’ service medals and some have even received 60 years' service medals. Currently membership numbers between 90 and 100.

Musical shows have been presented each year in the Spring and also many charity concerts at Christmas or in September. More recently, plays have been presented by some of the members, who have formed the Red Rose Players. Over the years, more than £30,000 has been donated to local charities.

The society is a member of the National Operatic and Dramatic Association
